Bit of a preface, I've been a huge fan of Calgary ever since you first unveiled him back in Inktober. His design has just the right amount of cartoony viciousness to make him feel both visually appealing and unnerving. I will say, though, that i think the recolor job you've done on him since then feels a bit oversaturated, especially in this piece. Maybe switch his collar back to an off-white and his jacket to black, and leave the rest of his clothes strongly colored?

but anyhow, i should probably talk about this piece now...

Pros:
As usual your lineart is fantastic. I don't know how you manage to make your line weights so strong and thick without loosing a lot of detail, but it's absolutely great. I find your mix of cross-hatching/shading from inking and digital shading to be a very interesting style that adds a rougher feel to the piece, in a good way. Using the glowing signs behind Calgary to add some brightly colored highlights to his form was brilliant, and it really helps define where the shadow of the tent ends and his form begins. His posing feels incredibly fluid, and the way you draw his top hat is just so expressive, and, next to his grinning toothy maw, is one of my favorite things about how you draw him.

that said...
Cons:
The shading on Calgary feels really bright, and this along with his oversaturated color scheme makes it hard to focus on elements you seem to be trying to draw attention to, namely his glowing pink eyes and the yellow glow of the tent. This is especially obvious on his pants, with his right leg looking just as brightly lit as his left, despite the latter being right in front of the tent door. Using dark blue as the shadows to contrast the warm lights is good in theory, but here it feels like the shadows are just too brightly colored, and they end up clashing with the also brightly colored lighting. I think the piece would really benefit from making the front half of Calgary (the side not facing the tent light) a LOT darker, as if the signs and tent were the only light sources. Thats really my only complaint with it, but I do think its a pretty major one.

Overall
I really like the setting of the piece, and the expressiveness of Calgary almost makes up for the overly-bright scene. But once I noticed just how bright it was, I couldn't ignore it, and it really did lessen the overall impact of the piece for me. If you were to add another layer or two of some really strong, near-black shadows, it would make a HUGE difference. Like, a star and a half difference. But that's just my opinion, and hey! maybe you were going for more of a color study thing instead.

ALL IN ALL THOUGH, I still think its pretty dang good, and it never felt as though I ever had to search for something positive to say about it. so thumbs up for that, and I hope we see more of this lovable monster in the future

the details in your art are always so delicious and visually heaven to look at, i could spend my whole weekend staring at the pronounced stitch on that glove forever, its like every single hatch mark has its own personality & looking at the piece is like watching a technicolor metropolis - its so alive <33

The colors of his eyes are positively mesmerizing, and whether or not it was intentional, I love the tiny tidbit of his stance (with his ankles off the ground) combined with the big long clown shoes making him look almost digitigrade.

Thank you! Ooh, glad you caught the pose thing--it's totally intentional, since he actually IS a digitigrade monster ;)

WELL, at least you get to die in an awesome monster circus tent, right? I'd totally take my chances with that.

Thank you! I'm really proud of this dummy's design, I think he's one of my better efforts. Glad you enjoyed!

One question: Would it be okay to make fanart (with full credit) of this character (I'm completely in love with his design)?
And this is a gorgeous drawing!

I'd honestly step into the tent considering the one time I ever went to a circus was one of the best days of my life. If it meant death though oh well
